Gemstone Concepts

Gemstones have always fascinated me. I do spend quite some time of my free time collecting and reading about minerals and gemstones.

I wanted to find a way to transfer my love for the stones into the art, not just copying the stones, their structure and color, but also to create a world where stones/gemstones are found in un-natural (for us) places. And this is when I had the idea of turning them into the tries. Depending on the gemstone's origin, history and culture related to it, the appearance of the stone would change.

Jade is represented as a bonsai, with Chinese lanterns as the seeds or flowers.

Opal is represented as a dried out tree with opal veins run through.

Sticky flowers are the seeds of it.

Small silhouettes are made for scale.

This speed-paints help brings insight into my digital painting, and are made for a better understanding of colour and texture. The knowledge from creating the opal went into creating a more believable Jade.
